Encapsulated-Insert Printed Parts

A printed acrylic badge, a magnet or a hardware insert set into the part mid-print so the plastic closes over it: overmolded on a 3D printer, no adhesive.

Applications › Custom Parts & Enclosures

We developed this for our own products: a laser-cut, UV-printed acrylic insert is placed on the part mid-print, and the print continues over its edges, so the insert is captured on the bottom, the sides and a lip over the face. The same method captures magnets, nuts, washers and tags. It gives a product a finished, permanent branded face without glue, and gives a functional part captured hardware without a second operation.

Typical examples

  • Branded products with a captured acrylic face
  • Magnet-backed parts with the magnet sealed inside
  • Captured nuts and washers in load paths
  • Tags and identifiers sealed into the part
  • Multi-color inserts in a single-color print
